Essay writing exercises for children

These are perfect to use as kids journal writing prompts, as short story writing prompts, or just for exercises to help students and children of all ages tap into their creativity. Maybe your kids will write an essay, maybe a poem, or maybe even a whole book!

Explain the Idiom – Try to guess what the idioms mean, and use them in a dialogue. These are long-term writing assignments in which students create a character and write a story over several weeks using the information in the outlines. The Homestay – You’re living in another country with a host family.

They’ll want to have a sense of what’s going to go in each square before they start drawing the pictures in earnest. Have them draw the pictures first and then add speech and thought bubbles and annotations. If possible, display the finished works so everyone can enjoy them. Kids are naturally drawn to the comic book or graphic novel format.
